DEFIANCE — Senior Zach Goodchild (Pickerington/North) tied a school record with a 3-under par 67 to lead the Ohio Northern men's golf team in the first round of the Defiance Spring Invitational on Saturday at Eagle Rock Golf Course.

The Polar Bears (17-40 overall) are tied with Earlham (Ind.) with 300s after the first round of the 36-hole tournament. Mount Saint Joseph leads the team standings with a 286, Transylvania (Ky.) is second with a 295 and Hanover (Ind.) is third with a 297.

ADA — The No. 11-ranked Ohio Northern women's outdoor track and field team recorded first place finishes in nine events as it cruised to a first place finish in the 2018 Polar Bear Invitational at Kerscher Stadium.

The Polar Bears will be back home a return to action next Friday and Saturday as they host the 2018 Outdoor Ohio Athletic Conference Championships.

On Saturday, the Polar Bears (39-7 overall) finished first of six teams with 188 points.

The Ohio Northern men's outdoor track and field team won the 6-team 2018 Polar Bear Invitational on Saturday afternoon at Kerscher Stadium.

The Polar Bears will be back home a return to action next Friday and Saturday as they host the 2018 Outdoor Ohio Athletic Conference Championships.

Northern (29-14 overall) won the meet on Saturday with 165 points.

MARION - Marion Elgin scored six runs in the fourth inning to break open a close game and defeat the visiting Ada baseball team 10-0 in a non-conference contest Friday evening.

 

The Bulldogs fell to 3-6 overall after the five-inning, run-rule shortened defeat. Elgin improved to 10-4 with the victory.

 

The hosts scored one run in the bottom of the first, and plated two more in the third to build a 3-0 lead. Elgin then put it out of reach with six scores in the fourth, and ended it with a run in the fifth.

 

The Comets out-hit Ada 7-3 and played error-less defense.

ADA - The Ada boys and girls track teams each finished second in a three-team home meet Wednesday evening at War Memorial Stadium.

 

Ben Logan took first in the girls meet with 68.5 points to nose out Ada (59) and Marion Harding (47.5).

 

Harding took first in the boys meet with 67 points. Ada scored 50 and BL was third with 41.

 

Junior strongman Noah Mattson won both the shot put and discus events to lead the Ada boys.

 

Sophomore distance ace Abbie James topped the Lady Bulldogs with first-place finishes in the 800 and 1600 meter runs.

CONVOY - The visiting Ada baseball team lost 12-0 at league-leading Crestview Thursday evening in a shortened Northwest Conference contest.

 

The Bulldogs fell to 3-5 overall and 0-4 in the NWC wth the five-inning, run-rule defeat. Crestview improved to 6-2 overall and 4-0 in the NWC with the shutout victory.

 

The Knights took control early with a five-run first inning and were never headed. They tacked on four more scores in the third, and three runs in the fourth to put the game out of reach.
