DEFIANCE — Sophomore Ryan Bruns (Chickasaw/Marion Local) scored a career-high 36 points and senior Nate Burger (Dayton/Alter) had a career-high 30 points to lead the Ohio Northern men's basketball team to a 106-91 season-opening victory at Defiance Monday evening at the Harrington Center.

The Polar Bears improve to 1-0, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 1-2.

Senior Joey DiOrio (Columbus/Watterson) scored 18 and sophomore Daniel Donner(Belleville/Northmor) added 10 points for ONU.

Nine Ohio Northern student-athletes were named All-Ohio Athletic Conference in football for 2017 in voting conducted by the league's 10 head coaches.

Senior linebacker Zach Schmerge (Wapakoneta), junior receiver Chad Rex (Bradenton, Fla./Lakewood Ranch) and sophomore running back Christiaan Williams (Sidney/Anna) were all First Team All-OAC selections.

Ohio Northern junior Kierra Watson (Brownsburg, Ind.) was named the Ohio Athletic Conference Women's Swimmer of the Week. The junior earned the honor after sweeping the back events in a 156-128 victory over Wittenberg.

Watson won the 100 back in 1:04.19 and the 200 back in 2:20.17 to lead the Polar Bears in the meet.

Northern returns to action on Nov. 30-Dec. 2 as it competes in the 3-day Wooster Invitationa

Senior Ian Simpson (Strongsville) has been named the Ohio Athletic Conference Men's Swimmer of the Week for the week.

Simpson posted four victories on Friday afternoon during ONU's 207-90 victory over Wittenberg.

Simpson swept the backstroke events, winning the 100 back in :55.41 and the 200 back in 2:05.32. 

He was also a part of the 200 medley and 200 free relay teams that took first place in each event.

Northern returns to action on Nov. 30-Dec. 2 as it competes in the 3-day Wooster Invitational.

GENEVA, N.Y. — The No. 14-ranked Ohio Northern women's soccer team saw its historic season come to an end in the quarterfinal round of the 2017 NCAA Div. III Women's Soccer Tournament as it fell to No. 5-ranked Hardin-Simmons (Tex.) 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at Boswell Field in Geneva, N.Y.

The Polar Bears conclude their season at 20-2-2 overall, while the Cowgirls improve to 23-0-0 overall and advance to the Final Four in Greensboro, N.C.

The 2017 season saw many firsts for the Polar Bears as they advanced to the Elite 8 of the NCAA Div. III Tournament for the first time in school history.
