On Saturday, May 4, the Ada High School athletic department commemorated the 50th anniversary of two remarkable achievements in school track and field history. Amidst the day’s Ada Invitational track and field event and a packed War Memorial Park, the school celebrated the team members and their coaches in ceremonies at War Memorial Stadium.

High School Principal Dan Lee announced to the cheering crowd a summary of their accomplishments:

“In 1974 two Ada relay teams were crowned Ohio High School track and field State champions. First let us acknowledge the remarkable feat accomplished in the mile relay, where history was made with a time of 3:25.9. This monumental achievement was made possible by the outstanding efforts of Dennis Boutwell, Allan Clum, Steve Decker and Mike Park. Their dedication, skill and perseverance propelled them to victory etching their names into Ada and Ohio high School athletic history that day. Equally deserving of our admiration is the triumph in the 880 yard relay, where another record was shattered with a remarkable time of 1:32. This was an Ohio high school record time. Leading the charge were [Steve Decker, Mike Park, Doug Klingler and Mike Mankey]. These gentlemen’s coordinated efforts and unwavering determination secured their rightful place as champions.

“In a bittersweet moment we must acknowledge the passing of one of our champions, Mike Park. Though he is no longer with us, his legacy and contributions to this historic victory will forever be remembered. Today we are honored to have his son Austin Park to accept the plaque on his father’s behalf.

“Behind every great team stands a guiding force and we extend our deepest appreciation to the mentors who nurtured these talents and instilled in them the values of discipline and teamwork. Let us recognize Coach Gary Ricker and Coach Roger Bartley for their invaluable contributions in shaping these athletes into champions.

“As we gather to honor these gentlemen in their extraordinary accomplishments, let their legacy serve as a beacon of inspiration for generations to come. May their triumphs continue to inspire greatness in all who dare to dream and strive for excellence. Congratulations to our 1974 Ohio Track and Field State Champions in the mile relay and 880 yard relay.”

Before and after the ceremonies, the honorees and current AHS staff and coaches talked track and relived memories of the 1974 championship season. Team member Steve Decker recalled wanting to play baseball rather than run track but being firmly guided to run track by the coaches. Coach Ricker pointed out that Bartley was the head coach, while Bartley said that the team wouldn’t have come together without Ricker. Current AHS track coach Tyler Craig praised the opportunity, saying, “I think it will inspire the kids because they see guys who have been there and accomplished huge things at the highest level. They’re an inspiration.”
