Men's 10-game win streak over.

The Ohio Northern men's basketball team's late rally in the second half came up just short as they fell 90-82 at the DeCarlo Center on Saturday afternoon. 

The Polar Bears fall to 15-8 overall and are tied for second place with a 13-3 record in the Ohio Athletic Conference.

The Blue Streaks improve to 16-6 and move into a tie for second place in the OAC with a 13-3 conference mark.

Men's track finishes 5th at All-Ohio

Senior Lucas Shumate and sophomore Ian McVey both posted first place finishes to lead the Ohio Northern men's indoor track and field team at the All-Ohio Championships in Westerville on Saturday afternoon.

The Polar Bears finished fifth out of 18 teams and improve to 39-15 overall.

For the fourth time in four meets, Shumate won the weight throw to lead Northern.

The senior won the event with a toss of 57' 11.75".

McVey also posted a first place finish as he won the 1-mile run in 4:26.

ONU track star holds best time in country

Junior Emily Richards (Delaware/Hayes) led a trio of Ohio Northern athletes as they competed at the Grand Valley State (Mich.) Big Meet on Friday.

Richards posted the sixth fastest time in Div. III history in the 1-mile run and finished second overall and was the first collegiate athlete to cross the finish line in a race that featured schools from Div. I, II and III. 

Richards finished second overall in 4:47.26 in the meet and also shattered the previous Ohio Northern school record held by former Polar Bear Alison Steinbrunner by over 11 seconds.

The junior currently owns the fastest time in the country in both the mile and the 800-meter run.

Want to be a Master Gardener?

The OSU Extension Master Gardener Volunteers of Allen, Hardin and Hancock County will be offering the Master Gardener Volunteer training program at the OSU-Lima Campus this spring. This program provides 50 hours of training in horticulture to interested gardeners who then commit to 50 hours of volunteer service in their home county.

Registration deadline is Feb. 20. Cost us $150.

Some topics include botany, plant selection, landscaping with annuals and perennials, vegetable gardening, tree selection and identification, fruit tree care, pesticides, soils and plant and insect identification.

Jon Umphress reviews Kiwanis Club year

Jon Umphress presented Power Point slide show detailing Ada Kiwanis Club highlights of the 2016 Kiwanis year.

Beginning with Kiwanis International’s entry in the 2016 Tournament of Roses Parade and ending with the club’s annual Christmas Luncheon/Auction, Christmas Benevolence project and the gift of books to students in pre-school classes and Ada Elementary, it was summed as a very busy year.

Other activities highlighted included the annual Pancake and Sausage Day, the planting of two trees in War Memorial Park, club-sponsored American Red Cross swimming lessons, assistance at the Ada pool, the Halloween Parade and the annual spaghetti dinner.

Bulldogs to face Cardinals at sectionals

WAPAKONETA - The Ada boys basketball team was seeded eighth out of 12 teams at the Allen East/Coldwater Div. IV super sectional drawings held Sunday at Wapakoneta.

The purple and gold (4-15) will face New Bremen (1-17) Wednesday, March 1 in the sectional semifinals at 8 p.m. in Coldwater.

The winner will then face second-seeded Fort Recovery (12-7) in the sectional finals Friday, March 3 at Coldwater. The victor there advances to the Wapak district semifinals March 7. 

Perry was voted the top seed, while USV is third and St. Henry fourth.
