Den Paul: "We are pretty excited about where we are this year"

The Ohio Northern football team was selected to finish third in the media poll and fourth in the coaches poll in the Ohio Athletic Conference at the 2017 OAC Football Media Day held at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton.

ONU received 54 points in the coaches poll to finish fourth and 265 points in the media poll to finish third.

Mount Union was tabbed as the preseason favorite by both the media and coaches, collecting 26 first place media votes and seven first place votes from the coaches.

John Carroll was picked to finish second in both the media poll and the coaches poll with 74 points in the coaches poll and 327 points in the media poll.

ADA — Sophomore Jake Abbot (Kenton) has been named a Scholar Athlete by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association for the 2016-17 season.

Abbott, a pharmacy major, has already earned Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference this season..

He tied for second on the team with 12 singles victories and also posted double digit victories in doubles.

The Polar Bears went 11-11 in 2016-17 under first year head coach Mike Bonnell.

Here's the varsity; 3rd to 8th grade camp next in line

Ada High School football coach Bob Olwin, now in his fifth year of local pigskin coaching, meets with team members on Tuesday morning following a two-day football camp for high school players.

Forty-three high schoolers are out for football this year.

The first game is against USV on Aug. 25 in McGuffey. The first home game pits the Bulldogs against LCC on Sept. 8. Game time is 7 p.m. for all games.

Immediately following the high school camp at War Memorial Par on Tuesday, another football camp took place for youth in 3rd to 8th grades. It's only July, but the park is a busy place as teams get ready for fall sports.

If you wondered where the youth of Ada were on Monday morning, you would have found many at Ada War Memorial Park for the beginning of Youth Football Camp.

Camp Director Shawn Christopher said this year's camp is the biggest camp ever with 51 third through eighth graders and 42 high school assistants participating.

The youngsters are learning skills through drills prior to regular practice which will be at the park for Midget Football and at the school for Junior High Football.

Trip includes a Rhine River cruise

The Ohio Northern women's soccer team is set to depart for Europe on Friday, July 21, where it will compete in four countries during an 11-day preseason trip.

Northern will take on two teams in the first six days, before entering a 7-game tournament on the final day.

After arriving in Zurich, Switzerland, Northern will travel to Salzburg, Austria where the team will tour the city and visit the birthplace of Mozart.

Northern will cap the day off with its first contest as it takes on FC Bergheim at 3:30 pm.

The fourth day of the trip will feature a tour of Munich, Germany and a tour of Allianz Stadium, home of 1860 Munich and Bayern Munich Fussball Clubs.

Team ahead of Shawnee, Kenton, Van Wert and Sherwood

Ada swim team finished fourth place in the July 14-15 Western Ohio Aquatics League meet in Kenton.

The boys’ team finished four and girls’ teams finished fifth.
